Mpohor District Collaborated with The Western Region Coordinating Council to Supply 6000 Coconut Seedlings Through the Agriculture Department to Farmers Free of Charge.


As part of the project by the Western Regional Minister, Dr. Okyere Darko to make the Western Region a hub for Coconut fruits production and supply base, the Mpohor District collaborated with the Western Region Coordinating Council to supply 6000 Coconut seedlings through the agriculture department to farmers free of charge. In all 49 farmers comprising 23 females and 26 males. It is envisaged that each will establish 1.5 to 2.0 acres farm.
Coconut fruit is one of the major foreign currency earners at the international level. Its demand normally exceed supply. At the local and national level coconut fruits and by products are sources of raw material for factories and industries in the production of cosmetics, beverages and medicines. Its juice rehydrates and supply nutritional valuables to sportsmen and sports women as well as the sick.

According to MoFA, Ghana currently supplies an estimate 5000 tons of Coconut fruits monthly to international market including those of ECOWAS sub regions. The object of collaboration is to include Mpohor District on the map of Coconut production and exporting hub in addition to job creation and income generation to the vulnerable poor farmers and the youth.

During the ceremony to present the Coconut seedlings to the Director of Agriculture Department of Mpohor District Assembly Mr Alhaji Abass Mohammed, the District Chief Executive Hon Ignatius Asaah Mensah admonished the beneficiary farmers to adhere to technical extension advisory services for 99 percentage survival of the free Coconut seedlings. The cost of offloading was borne by the Assembly due to pragmatic decision by the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Mark Evans Ando.
